Power Inverter Vs Solar Inverter

An inverter converts the Direct Current i.e DC voltage to Alternating current i.e AC voltage. In most cases, the input DC voltage is usually lower while the output AC is equal to the grid supply voltage of either 120 volts, or 240 Volts depending on the country.

The inverter may be built as standalone equipment for applications such as solar power, or to work as backup power supply from batteries which are charged separately.

Inverters are used for a variety of applications that range from small car adapters to household or office applications, and large grid systems.
· Uninterruptible power supplies
· As standalone inverters
· In solar power systems
· As a building block of a switched mode power supply

How Power Inverter Works After Installation Or Setting Up

power inverter vs solar inverter

Power inverter Vs solar inverter

  1. Power Inverter uses fuel generator, diesel generator or electricity, as their main source of charging and generates power from it. While Solar Inverters use solar (sunlight) energy as their power source.
  2. Power Inverters are installed in homes and offices extract power from power grid during normal power supply and store it in the battery. When current goes off or companies face a power outage, UPS in the inverter gets activated automatically and supply power till normal supply resumes. While Solar Inverter extracts power also converts DC to AC but it extracts power from grids that are attached to photovoltaic solar modules (Panels) and not from the power grids that are erected by electricity department.
  3. Power Inverter is used primarily to convert current DC to AC. Besides, It charges battery using electricity. While Solar Inverter also works similar to Power inverter but it has an additional feature to charge the battery using solar panels.
  4. Another very significant difference between Power Inverter and Solar Inverter is in the mode of their working. A regular inverter system has a system of inverter and batteries that are connected to the home power connection. When the power is coming from the grid, inverter system charges the batteries using the power coming from the grid. When the power is off, the inverter takes the DC power from the batteries and converts it into AC used by appliances. There is an automated switch in the system that senses if the grid is not supplying power and switches the Inverter into battery mode. On the other hand, an off-grid solar powered system has an assembly of solar panels, charge controller, batteries and inverter. The batteries are charged using the power from solar panels and the inverter has the same function of converting DC to AC. It can also have an automated switch to sense if the grid is not supplying power that can change the power source of the connected home from the grid to batteries.
In conclusion both power inverter and solar inverters are very good depending on the one you can afford. But off grid solar inverter (the one that uses battery) has more advantage over every order types of inverter because it help you cut cost on electricity bills because its source of energy comes from sunlight through the use solar panels.

The only drawback solar inverters have is if when there is no sun to charge the battery there will be no alternative power supply.

Do check out our post on Power inverter if not read it. As of power inverter are common in use in Nigeria and solar are yet to circulate, may be because they cost more than every other inverter types.
